NORTH SHORE KIWANIS DIVERSITY

OUR DIVERSITY
By M. Roy Rosenthal
(2003)

For a small club (22-27 active members) the NorthShore Kiwanis Club sure has diversity. In Webster's Dictionary 'diversity' is defined as the quality of being diverse, different; a variety. And variety is what Northshore has and what has kept it alive and active for more than forty years.

The club membership spans the age groups from young to senior citizens and crosses religious, ethnic and color lines and has members who are businessmen, professionals and even retirees. There is an almost even split between male and female members and, in fact, we’re among the very first clubs to bring in women members and possibly the first to have a woman as president.

Among the members there is a stockbroker, a lawyer, an insurance salesman, a realtor, a banker, a land developer, a hotelier, a computer programer, a CPA, a publisher, a police chief and even a funeral director.

Drawing it's membership from the communities of Surfside, Bay Harbor and Bal Harbour, the club boasts an ex-mayor and two active council persons.

The members really look forward to the weekly luncheon meetings where Kiwanis business is settled followed by programs that are informative and entertaining. Conversation and laughter abound while lunch is enjoyed. Good news, and sometime sad news, is shared. This diverse group, a veritable 'melting pot', is a close-knit club of members who have become socially good friends while actively participating in and attaining all of Kiwanis' goals.

We welcome everyone to join us!! Reservations are necessary. Everyone is welcome to attend our luncheons where fine food is offered at a reasonable cost and covers a variety of diets.

HISTORY

Founded in 1915 and headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, Kiwanis International is a thriving organization of service- and community-minded men and women who support children and young adults worldwide. More than 8,000 Kiwanis clubs in more than 70 countries make their mark by responding to the needs of their communities and pooling their resources to address worldwide issues. Through these efforts, Kiwanis International is truly "Serving the Children of the World."

NorthShore Kiwanis service projects also address other needs within the community, such as combating substance abuse, helping elderly people, promoting literacy, supporting youth sports, responding to disasters, and aiding specific persons or families in need.

Our local service projects often are linked to the International Kiwanis program, "Young Children: Priority One." This initiative focuses on the needs of young children in pediatric trauma, safety, child care, early development, infant health, nutrition, and parenting skills.

Worldwide, the entire Kiwanis family is committed to eliminating the devastating effects of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD), the world's leading preventable cause of mental retardation. More than 1.5 billion people are at risk of IDD. Through Kiwanis' efforts, many parents who have been affected by IDD are able to watch their children reach their full potential. The results of the IDD program will benefit future generations.

North Shore Kiwanis club is a snapshot of the community, with members from all walks of life and at every step of the career ladder. But they are unified in their belief that children and their communities benefit from the efforts of a proficient group of caring and involved volunteers.
